Formentor

Formentor is a great nature experience in the north-east of Mallorca. The elongated peninsula is 12 km long, but only 900 metres wide at its narrowest point in the middle of the peninsula. The Tramuntana mountain range ends here, making Formentor very mountainous. The highest point is 384 metres above sea level.

At the tip of Formentor is the unique viewpoint Cap de Formentor. Here you’ll find the iconic white lighthouse with views of most of north-eastern Mallorca. At the bottom of the lighthouse is a lovely cafeteria where guests can take their coffee and ensaimada (Mallorcan cake) out onto a large terrace. It is not possible to climb the lighthouse.

The road to Cap de Formentor offers many other viewpoints, of which Mirador es Colomer is the most popular. It’s easily recognisable by the small car park that appears after about 4 km of driving from Puerto Pollensa. A bumpy path (not for the faint-hearted) leads to a large terrace raised 232 metres above the water on a very steep rocky coastline. To the north-east is the very small rocky island of El Colomer, which gives the viewpoint its name. Despite its small size, El Colomer is certainly one of the most photographed islands in Mallorca.

From the car park at Mirador es Colomer, a road leads to the old watchtower Talaia d’Albercuix, where the Mallorcans kept watch for enemies some 300 years ago. The location is well chosen because on days with good visibility, it is possible to see all the way to Menorca. It is recommended to walk the approximately 2 km from the car park as the road is very narrow.

The most famous (and best) beach on Formentor is Cala Formentor, also known as Playa de Formentor. A beautiful sandy beach with crystal clear bathing water, one of Mallorca’s most beautiful natural beaches. The beach is almost a kilometre long, but relatively narrow. At the end of the beach is the legendary luxurious Hotel Formentor, which opened in 1930 and has since been visited by celebrities such as Charlie Chaplin and Winston Churchill.

Formentor is known by Mallorcans as the ‘meeting place of the winds’. Unfortunately, it’s also the meeting point for tourists, and in high season it’s best to get to Formentor early in the day. This is especially true if you’re travelling all the way to Cap de Formentor by car.

If you need a rental car, check out the offers at Europcar, which has several offices in Mallorca.
